Welcome to the Environment section of the Borough Council

The Environment Department is responsible for the following activities:

 

1. Street Cleansing

An extensive 7 day street cleansing programme is in place in the Borough. Kilkenny Borough Council has a modern fleet of machines in operation in the city.

2. Refuse and Recycling Collection Service

A Kerbside collection is a separate collection for clean and dry recyclable waste. This involves separating dry recyclables (see list) from ordinary household waste. Your dry recyclables are put into a green recycling bag and your ordinary refuse is put into a yellow ordinary refuse bag. These bags can be purchased from your local shop (see list)

3. Litter Bin Collection

A detailed scheduled programme of emptying the city's litter bins is in operation in Kilkenny with Litter Bins emptied 7 days a week. Currently there is a replacement programme in place to remove aging bins and to replace with modern bins specially designed for urban landscapes.


4. Litter Pollution Control & Enforcement

The reduction in Litter is a major priority of Kilkenny Borough Council. Currently the Borough Council has one full time Litter Warden. Litter Fines have now increased to €150.


5. Parks & Open Spaces

Kilkenny Borough Council operates a parks section which maintains and enhances amenity areas within the Borough.

6. Nursery

Kilkenny Borough Council has developed over a number of years a modern nursery located in Evans Home and supplies the city all year round with bedding plants, trees & scrubs. The council undertakes an extensive gardening service for the City and each year adores roundabouts and streets with floral displays.


7. Burial Grounds


- St. Kieran's Cemetery is operated and maintained by Kilkenny Borough Council.

8. Historical Graveyard Scheme 2008

The closing date for completed applications is 5pm on 29th February 2008. Applications received after this date will not be accepted.


9. Amenity Grants

Every year Kilkenny Borough Council assists local communities, by way of grants, in developing amenities in their areas.
