Heritage Week 2011
Kilkenny will be celebrating this years Heritage Week (Sat 20th - Sun 28th August),
with a huge variety of events taking place around the county.
"There's something for everyone in this years programme" says Dearbhala Ledwidge, Kilkenny Heritage Officer, "and you don't need to be a heritage buff to take part".
Experience a star dome in Tullahought, take a walk with wildlife at the slate quarries, take part in guided gourmet walks, or watch medieval re-enactments in the city.

Event: Nature Walk with Eanna Ni Lamhna
Venue: Tullahought

Change: The event will take place at 14.30 on Sunday 21st Aug, not 11.00 as listed in brochure
Event: Tour of Deerpark Mines

Event: IWT Wild Watch Walk
Venue: Slate Quarries, Kilmoganny

Change: The event will take place on Sunday 28th Aug at 7pm, not Sun 21st at 8pm as listed in the brochure
The Parade, Kilkenny City
See the city mace and sword projected in coloured lights onto the Castle and Parade each evening after dark. This initiative is organised by the Kilkenny City Walls Steering committee of Kilkenny Borough Council and is part of the National Walled Towns celebrations, as part of Heritage Week.
Eat History/Drink Ale
Monday August 22nd 7pm-9pm
Cost: €16 (places are limited so booking is highly recommended)
Starts at Bridie’s Bar on John St. Ends at Cleere’s Bar on Parliament St.
Learn about Kilkenny’s medieval past while sampling some medieval alcohol! The walking tour visits four pubs (Bridies, Tynan’s, Kyteler’s, and Cleere’s) with a different drink waiting to be sampled at each (mead, real ale, French wine, Smithwicks or pale ale).

Ecclesiastical Tour of Kilkenny

Starts outside the Tourist Office on Rose Inn St.

Renaissance Movie Night: The Last Valley
Wednesday 24th 8.30pm
Cost: Free
Billy Byrne’s Bar, John St.
Starring Michael Caine, The Last Valley is a powerful movie set in 17th Century Germany as the continent rips itself apart during the Thirty Years War. Made in 1970 it was an allegory for the conflict going on at that time in Vietnam.

Medieval Movie Morning: The Princess Bride

Sit back and enjoy this medieval fantasy. For the full experience a face painter will be present to transform you or your little ones into warriors or princesses!

Medieval Wine Tasting
Saturday August 27th 7pm-8.30pm
Cost: €10 (places are limited so booking is highly recommended)
The Hole in the Wall, High St.
Taste the medieval with Liam Murray from The Wine Centre in the 16th century surroundings of the Hole In The Wall. Several varieties will be available for sampling as Liam talks about how many of today’s wines had their origins in the Middle Ages.

Callan
Thomas Kilroy, native of Callan, distinguished playwright and author of The Big Chapel, has agreed to participate in two events during Heritage Week, on Saturday, August 27th.
- 6pm A Public Reading from The Big Chapel at the Gardener’s World (Future) Commonage installation by architects in the walled garden at Westcourt. Westcourt was the location for the “Horace Butler/Whytescourt” strand of The Big Chapel and Tom will read an appropriate site-specific passage.
- 8pm Tom will be a focal figure in a Public Conversation about Theatre in Callan, to be held in the indoor performance space designed and constructed by Culturstruction for Commonage.
We are inviting a wide variety of people to this event and hope for a lively dialogue about past achievements and future aspirations. It is open to anyone and everyone who is interested!
